The Magpie
Simon Turner issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Aldgate, Aldgate Ward, City of London.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 69; Obv inscription: SIMON.TVRNER.NEXT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A magpie (in field); Rev inscription: THE.PIE.AT.ALGATE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Grocers' arms (in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Grocers are: Argent a chevron Gules between nine cloves Sable (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960). The Pie or Magpie at Al[d]gate is presumably the same sign as the Pie without Aldgate see token numbers 6496 and 6493-4 for a different issuer in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London.
