Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; early-mid 14th century
Jousting knight
This badge depicts a jousting knight. The knight carries a shield with the cross of St George, who became the patron saint of England during the wars with France in the 1300s. Jousts were good training for combat as well as tests of bravery and skill, and proof of nobility. Several badges depicting knights jousting in tournaments have been found in London - they might have been worn by young men hoping to be knights or by people who enjoyed these glamourous events.
