Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Woodstock
Livery badge in the shape of a woodstock. This is a tree trunk with several waving roots at the bottom and a plant sprouting from the top. In heraldry this is described as a tree trunk eradicated (with roots) and sprouting. This badge would have been the symbol for one of the noble families in England. Supporters of the noble families fighting for power during the Wars of the Roses wore badges to show their allegiance. This badge may have been worn by a follower of the Duke of Bedford, whose badge was a root device.
