Printed Ephemera — 1909-10
A Defence of Sunday Meetings on the Common
This leaflet entitled ' A Defence of Sunday Meetings on the Common', was published by Wimbledon Women's Social and Political Union (W.S.P.U.) in October 1909. It records a suffragette's response to a letter of complaint about union activities printed in the Wimbledon and District Gazette in September. The Wimbledon branch of the W.S.P.U. was founded in 1908. As well as organising lectures and fundraising initiatives, the branch staged regular meetings on Wimbledon Common. These meetings attracted crowds of up to 5,000 but many local residents were against the union's militancy and tried to prevent the meetings from being held.
Eventually a local Retaliation League was formed that vowed that 'every act of violence perpetrated by these women will be answered by this league by attacks on the private houses or properties of Militant Suffragettes'.
