Pottery, vessel, beaker
This fineware beaker of Lyon colour-coated ware was used by a Roman jeweller to hide four intaglios (engraved stones for finger-rings). The jeweller buried the pot in his workshop when Boudica attacked London in AD60. The engraver, at this time of London’s development, must have been an immigrant craft worker and was highly skilled.
The vessel has a high rounded shoulder with a roughcast dedoration and plain everted rim.
For the four intaglios see EST83[399]<58>, <59>, <60>, <61>.
Type: LYON 3/GT20.
