Lead, label, soldier's name tag
A lead tag, in the form of an ansate panel, with an incised inscription:
C - Q - CORNELII VERECVNDI or C(enturia) Q(uinti) Corneli Verecundi; 'The century of Quintus Cornelius Verecundus'.
The object is slightly undulating and there is dishing around the hole on the left side of the inscription. Labels such as this were attached to boxes and packages that travelled with the army.
A 'century' - despite the name, which suggests 'a hundred' - actually comprised 80 men. Centuries were part of larger formations - 'cohorts' - either in the legions (entirely Roman citizens) or auxiliaries (non-citizens). Vercundus was the commanding officer, the centurion. The fact that he had three names indicates that he was a Roman citizen, and so probably a legionary centurion.
