Card, memorial card
Memorial card issued to commemorate the death of Dr Thomas Barnardo. Printed in black on white card with black border and silver decoration. The inside of the card reads 'In loving memory of Dr Barnardo Founder and Director of the National Waifs association who died September 19th 1905 aged 60 years. He saved sixty thousand unwanted and destitute children from suffering, vice and crime interred at Barkingside, Ilford, September 27th 1905' . On the opposite page is a portrait photograph of the Doctor together with a commemorative verse. By the time of his death in 1905 Dr Barnardo ran 96 childrens home, caring for more than 8,500 children. Although much loved by the poor of London's East End his methods were at times controversial. He often falsified photos of ragged children to raise funds and transported over 28,000 boys in his care to Canada. The card was purchased for 1d (one penny) from a street trader operating in the Ludgate Hill area of the City of London.
