Axe head, shipwright's side axe head
Head of a shipwright's side axe, impressed with 'I C' on one side. Recovered from the Thames foreshore at Custom House. Used for paring and trimming ship's timbers. Axes are normally bevelled only on one side for right-handed use. Side axes are bevelled on both sides and can be used by either hand to work on both sides of the timber.
