Hook, stevedores "s" hook
Stevedore's sing 'S' hook with wooden handle. The pronounced bend, above the handle, was designed to protect the knuckles. Such hooks were commonly used for moving crates, timber and sets of cargoes.
Londons Dockers used a range of dock hooks to handle particular cargoes. Efficient hooks were essential for moving cargoes speedily, especially when doing piecework. Dockers often owned their own hooks, usually buying them or having them made, when they started work.
