Tooth, tooth of sperm whale
Sperm whale tooth. Decorating these with intricate designs and images was a popular pastime of sailors during their leisure time at sea. Known as 'scrimshaw' the decorated items could be sold when back in port. Sperm whale teeth were recorded as being in the plunder taken by the pirate Captain William Kidd.
