Port & River — 1909-1940
Sampling tool, sampling iron
This large sugar sampling iron would have been used to extract samples of raw sugar from hogsheads (large casks) in the West India Docks, on the Isle of Dogs. Although it has been dated to the early 20th century, it may be much older. The West India Docks held the monopoly on imports of sugar to London in the first three decades of the 19th century and this iron might have been in use that early.
