Port & River — 1875-1930
Chiv, cooper's box chiv
Cooper's wooden box chive plane. Used to smooth the surface near the top of the cask staves. This hand tool was used by a cooper working in the Crescent Wine vaults at London Dock.
The Port of London Authority employed coopers to repair damaged casks of imported wines and spirits. The coopers also helped when the cargoes were tested for quality by knocking out the bung from the barrel, and replacing it once a sample had been extracted.
