Saxon & Medieval — Middle Saxon; c. 873
Coin
One of four silver coins minted by King Burgred about 873. London was in the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia, where Burgred was king from 852 until the Vikings drove him out in 874. Someone may have hidden these silver pennies from Viking raiders in the 870s.
