A gold quarter-noble of Edward III (1327-1377), London mint. The style is Fourth coinage, Treaty period, and coins of this type were produced 1363-1369.. Initial cross Pattee. Obverse: shield quartered with the arms of England and France, in tressure of eight arcs with trefoils on the cusps and legend reading +EDWARD DEI GRA REX ANGL with an annulet before the E. Reverse: floriated cross with fleurs-de-lys at ends and at centre and lion passant in angles within a tressure of eight arcs with legend +EXALTABITVR IN GLORIA.
The coin was found hidden in the rim of a knitted Tudor cap (accession number 5000).
