Amphora, Dressel 20 amphora
Handle and part of the neck a globular amphora (form Dressel 20) in red fabric, with the stamp 'ACIRGI'.
The amphora was used to export olive oil from Baetica, a Roman province in what is now southern Spain. It was made in one of the many potters' workshops in the Guadalquivir vally, the centre of the olive oil trade. The stamp is likely to mean 'from Acirgi' or 'from the potteries at Acirgi'.
The fragment was found on the site of St Katherine Coleman church in Fenchurch Street, EC3.
