Coin, nummus AE4
A copper alloy nummus of Constans. Constans was raised to the rank of Caesar (Crown Prince) by his father, Emperor Constantine, in AD 333. Following his father’s death in AD 337, he became co-emperor alongside his brothers, Constantine II and Constantius II, AD 337-350. The back of the coin depicts Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory. This coin was minted in AD 347-348.
Obv: Diademed bust of Constans, facing right. Obv inscription: [CON]STANS [P F AVG]. Rev: Two Victories, standing face to face, holding wreaths. Rev inscription: VIC[TORIAE DD AVGG Q NN].
Found scattered in a stokehole of a small hypocaust in the east wing of Billingsgate Bath House, Lower Thames Street, London EC3 [City of London].
