Coin, argenteus
A silver argenteus coin of Galerius. Galerius was named as Caesar (Crown Prince) by Emperor Diocletian in AD 293. Diocletian abdicated in AD 305 making way for Galerius to become emperor of the Eastern Empire, AD 305-311. The back of the coin depicts Genius. This coin was minted in Serdica (modern day Sofia, Bulgaria), AD 303-305.
Obv: Laureate head of Galerius, facing right. Obv inscription: GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES. Rev: Genius, standing left, with a modius on his head, holding a patera (dish) in his right hand and a cornucopia in the left, a chlamys (cloak) is draped over his shoulder. Rev inscription: GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, B in field (right), SM.SD in exergue.
