Tankard
The White Bear tavern, Bear Gardens, Bankside, Southwark, probably derived its name from the two white bears which were baited in the Bear Gardens in the early 17th century (see Lillywhite, 1972, p, 633 - 16023). This is one of two pint tankards from the White Bear (See A2751 cat. no. XXX below, also with the surname‘Ward’). Thomas Ward and Robert Ward (A2751) were clearly related: perhaps father and son. The tankards seem to have been cast from the same mould which suggests a connection between the two pewterers.
