Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1995
Canary Wharf with council flats
Brooke's print is one of a series entitled 'Thirty-six Views of Canary Wharf' based on the Japanes artist Katsushika Hokusai's 'Thirty-Six Views of Mt Fuji'. The prints are relief prints on Japanese tissue made using a combination of linocut and card. Brooke used linocut because it has some of the qualities of the Japanese woodblock print. Stylistically, the prints allude to their Japanese source, with a palette relying on strong blues, reds and yellow, with block-wipe and graded transitions between colours.
According to Brooke, a founder member of East London printmakers, 'my prints are built up with many layers of over-printed colour, echoing the organic way a city evolves, with each generation and tribe adding to what has gone before'.
