Decorative arts — 1807-1814
Medal
This medal was struck in 1814 to commemorate the 1807 abolition of the slave trade. It shows a Western man shaking hands with an African man in a loin cloth and cape. Above is the caption 'We are all brethren', and below 'Slave trade abolished by Great Britain 1807'. The medal was made for Zachary Macaulay, Governor of Sierra Leone, for distribution there. As a young man, Macaulay worked for five years as an estate manager in Jamaica, overseeing enslaved Africans. However, on returning to Britain, he became a convert to the campaign for the abolition of slavery.
