A mother buying bagels
Dora Holzhandler's painting depicts a woman and child selecting bagels from a Jewish bakery. The artist's visit to a West Hampstead bagel bakery on West End Lane 'on a dark, winter afternoon' provided part of the inspiration for this work. Although the scene itself is imagined, it incorporates Holzhandler's memories of Grodzinski's bakery in Golders Green and her childhood spent in the East End.
Born in Paris, Holzhandler moved to Dalston, East London, in 1933. Influenced by her interest in Jewish and Buddhist spiritualism, much of her work celebrates love, motherhood and religion.
