Post-Medieval — Late 15th - late 16th century
Miniature ewer
A lidded ewer, complete apart from its missing lid. It has a thin handle with a ring hinge to secure the lid. The ewer has an everted rim, narrow neck and globular body with a pedestal foot. The entire surface of the vessel is decorated with bands of geometric design; hatched diamonds interspersed with pellets. The foot has gadrooning detail. This toy ewer imitates full-size versions which would have been used for pouring water for washing diners' hands after meals. Reference: Forsyth, H. & Egan, G. (2005): Toys, Trifles & Trinkets. Base metal miniatures from London 1200 to 1800, pg. 280, cat. no. 8.107.
