Sample, dress making sample
Dressmaking sample, 1889-1895.
Green wool half jacket, quarter scale showing binding, boning, buttons and buttonholes, seam neatening, collar detail, hooks and eyes and waist stay.
These miniature wool sewing samples represent the work of Miss Agnes Stageman of Stepney, one of the first dressmaking teachers employed by the London School Board. The Board hired many new teachers, but at first women were thought suitable only for teaching infants and girls. Teaching became more professional with the formation of the Metropolitan Board Teachers' Association in 1872, and the agreement of standard pay scales by the Board.
