Social History — 1908-1912
Badge
Enamelled brooch designed and made by the artist and enamellist Ernestine Mills. Ernestine Mills made this brooch in the suffragette colours either as a private commission or for sale at a fund raising event. Enamelled with the WSPU motto 'Votes for Women' in white it is surrounded by a green wreath and set against a purple ground. On the reverse are scratched the initials of the previous owner 'Mrs G I W'. Ernestine Mills studied at the Slade School of Art and was associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. Although she made several items of enamel jewellery for the suffrage campaign, she was not formally linked to any particular suffrage society.
