Charles I rose farthing
A copper alloy rose farthing of Charles I. Obverse: Crown over crossed sceptres with legend 'CAROLVS D G MAG BRIT' with 'Lis' mintmark. Reverse: Crowned rose with legend 'FRAN ET HIB REX' with same mintmark. In 1635, in an effort to reduce the numbers of counterfeit farthings in circulation, the harp device was changed to a rose and crown and the flans were made with patches of brass set into the copper, a technique which was supposedly difficult to imitate. The farthings were struck under licences issued to Lord Malravers and his father, the Earl of Arundel.
