Post-Medieval — 17th century
Pounce pot
Pounce, made from powdered cuttle-fish bone or finely ground pumice stone, was sprinkled over parchment to provide a smooth, grease-free surface for writing. The abrasive also helped to break up some of the surface fibres making it more receptive to the ink. The pounce pot has a dished top to collect any surplus powder.
