Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1986-1987
The Monument
Designed by Christopher Wren, the Monument was constructed following an Act of Parliament to commemorate the Great Fire of London of 1666. The permanent memorial was completed in 1677, close to the site where the fire began. The Doric column is surmounted by a gilt-bronze urn from which flames emerge to represent the Great Fire.
At 202 feet high, the Monument is dwarfed by the adjacent crane towering over it and the derelict building on the left. Painted in a hyper-real style, the artwork contrasts old and new city architecture and reminds the viewer of the dramatic change in scale during the twentieth century.
