Saxon & Medieval — Saxo-Norman; 10th - 11th century
Double-sided comb
Medieval bone double-sided composite comb. To make a composite comb, flat 'tooth-plates' would be riveted between two side plates. The flat tooth-plate would then have teeth cut out of it. The side plates on this comb are notched due to the maker over-cutting the teeth. The teeth on one side of the comb are finer than on the other. The comb is decorated with a ring-and-dot design. The comb has a matching carrying case (A1671a).
