Coin, denarius
A silver denarius coin of Emperor Trajan, ruler of the Roman Empire, AD 98-117. The back of the coin depicts the female personification of the Via Traiana, a major Roman road which connected the major cities of the Adriatic to the Via Appia for direct access to Rome. This coin was minted in Rome, Italy, AD 112-115.
Obv: Laureate bust of Trajan, facing right, left shoulder draped. Obv inscription: IMP TRAIANO AVG GER [DAC PM TR P] COS VI PP. Rev: Via Traiana, bare to waist, reclining left, holding a wheel against her right knee, resting her left arm on the rocks, and holding a branch in her left hand. Rev inscription: [SPQR OPTIM]O PRINCIPI. [VIA] TRAIANA in exergue.
