Social History — 1823-1824
Weight, bell weight
This 56lb bell weight was used as a local trading standard in the City of London. The portcullis stamps indicate that it was used at the Corporation of London's Weights and Measures Office as a local standard. This was checked against the Board of Trade standards and then against working weights which were taken out to traders in the City. Weights like this were later used as working weights at Billingsgate Fish Market.
