Coalman's leather 'backing'
An employee of Normanton Coal Company, coal suppliers based in Yorkshire, used this 'backing'. It provided protection for the coalman's neck and shoulders when he carried heavy sacks of coal. The Normanton Coal Company was a subsidiary of the coal merchants A & H Betts Ltd of St Rule Street, Battersea.
