Order of the Garter star
The Order of the Garter, founded in 1348, is the oldest Order of British Chivalry. The Order is limited to the Monarch, the Prince of Wales and 24 knights or companions.
This Star of the Order of the Garter belonged to King George III and was presented to Sir Herbert Taylor in 1818 by the Prince Regent (later King George IV). General (Sir Herbert) Taylor had served with the Duke of York before becoming his secretary in 1794. The Garter Star has its own leather case lettered on the lid 'GARTER STAR OF THE LATE KING'.
The Star was possibly supplied by Hamlet, the royal goldsmith and jeweller of Leicester Square, London. It has silver rays with a centre of gold and enamel with the Garter and motto encircling a cross in translucent red enamel.
