Helmet, fireman's helmet
Fireman's brass helmet, c. 1900.
Captain Shaw introduced brass helmets for the firemen of the new Metropolitan Fire Brigade (later renamed the London Fire Brigade). The crest on the top was designed to protect the wearer from falling masonry or timber. Brass helmets were abandoned in the 1930s due to the hazard of live electric wires hanging from the ceilings of burning buildings brushing against the conductive metal.
This helmet carries the initials of the London Fire Brigade (LFB), and the London County Council (LCC), which replaced the Metropolitan Board of Works.
