Chatelaines were usually worn by women, and were designed to carry small personal items such as watches and scissors. This chatelaine is formed from a clasp and three linked plaques, which are worked in gold filigree with images of the goddess Venus accompanied by cupids. There are two chains suspended from the clasp, for attaching items.
