Decorative arts — Late 18th century
Pendant, memorial pendant
Oval pendant, with glass compartments in a gold frame, set with seed pearls around the front rim. The front compartment contains, in relief on an ivory ground, a monument supporting an urn which is decorated with diamonds, gold banding, swags set with seed pearls and the monogram ' LL'. The monument is set in a landscape underneath a weeping willow. The back compartment contains plaited hair.
The imagery on this pendant indicates that it was made to commemorate the death of an individual and was worn in memory of them. Locks of woven or plaited hair were incorporated in jewellery as reminders of loved ones or the dead.
