Social History — 1790-1825
Mantrap
Mantraps like this one were set in the grounds of wealthy suburban homes to protect them from burglars. Such deterrents were commonly used to protect property from thieves in the period before the creation of the Metropolitan Police. The outdoor use of such traps and spring guns was outlawed by Act of Parliament in 1827.
