Social History — 1914-1918
Shop sign, door lintel
Wooden door lintel painted black with the sign, in white paint, 'The owner is a British Subject'. The lintel was discovered during the demolition of a shopfront at Tolmers Square, Euston in the 1980s. It dates from World War I when German & Italian shops and businesses were regularly targeted by mobs and gangs. Fear of attack led many to openly declare their allegiance and loyalty to Britain. But such signs were no guarantee that premises would not be ransacked and looted and those considered 'enemies' beaten.
