Pistol, pocket flintlock pistol
This pocket pistol is signed 'Segalas', possibly the emigré Huguenot gunmaker Israel Segalas who came to London in the late 17th century. However, this particular pistol may be a fake manufactured in Liège. Owing to the prestige of the London gun trade it was common for manufacturers to mark their pistols 'London' for retail purposes. Pocket pistols of this type were favoured by travellers for protection against highwaymen and footpads. They could be secreted easily in a gentleman's waistcoat pocket or a lady's muff.
