Printed Ephemera — 1860-1910
Court Mourning Stationery
In the 19th century, when it came to court mourning etiquette, it was not just special rules that had to be observed in regards to clothing but to stationery also. Black borders were printed around visiting and correspondence cards. Letter paper and envelopes had similar black borders. When ribbons were used to decorate stationery then they also had to be black in colour.
This small advertisement promotes court mourning stationery in a general way. It simply states that such stationery can be 'obtained at all Stationers in the United Kingdom'. It is probable that leaflet was produced just after the death of a member of the Royal family, possibly Queen Victoria.
