Printed Ephemera — 1889-1899
The Italian Sculptured Marble Company
Large quantities of Italian marble were imported for gravestones and other funerary memorials. London's large new cemeteries on the edge of the city offered more space for burials involving elaborate outdoor monuments and small mausoleums. Firms advertised their designs widely to the Victorian public. The Italian Sculptured Marble Company prices were competitive as their moneuments were executed in their studios in Carrara, Italy where the marble was quarried. The company claimed that this saved on the 'higher prices for workmen's labour' which had to be paid in England. Another benefit was 'the advantage of the High Artistic skill for which Italian sculptors have ever been celebrated'.
The two page catalogue of the Italian Sculptured Marble Company comprises one page with 21 designs and a page of text detailing the benefits of ordering from the firm. The company's showroom was located at 144 & 146 East Road just to the north of the City Road.
