Library — 1658; 17th century
The Bible
This Bible is said to have belonged to Oliver Cromwell, as a signature of ‘O Cromwell’ has been added to the flyleaf inside. However, the signature is not genuine and was probably added in the 19th century. There are more Cromwell ‘relics’ than for any other British ruler, apart from Queen Victoria. This Bible was printed in 1658, the year of Cromwell’s death. The cover is contemporary calf, is gilt and has two silver clasps with gilt edges.
