Charles I memento mori ring
A gold memento mori finger ring with an oval bezel depicting a portrait of Charles I in painted enamel. The back of the bezel has a skull flanked by the initials ‘CR’ for ‘Carolus Rex’ (‘King Charles’). Jewels with the king’s initials or portrait were circulated among Royalist supporters. Some were produced to inspire devotion but many were issued after his death with inscriptions: ‘Remember’ or ‘Prepared be to follow me’.
