Post-Medieval — Mid-17th century
Charles I memento mori locket
Black enamel memento mori locket pendant decorated inside with Charles I's portrait. There is an inscription around the edge of the inside of the locket lid: 'Quis temperet a lacrymis' (meaning ‘Who can refrain from tears’). In the centre it reads: 'Jan: 30/1648' underneath an eye in black and white enamel from which fall three white tears. Jewels with King Charles I’s initials or portrait were circulated among Royalist supporters. Some were produced to inspire devotion but many were issued after his execution with inscriptions mourning his death or exhorting his followers to remember him.
