Downe fall of Dagon or the Taking Downe of the Cheapside Crosse This Second of May 1643
This pamphlet is entitled 'Downe Fall of Dagon or the Taking Downe of Cheap-side Crosse This Second of May 1643'. In 1641, the medieval cross in Cheapside became the target of puritan iconoclasts (image breakers). A propaganda war began between those who wished to keep it and those who believed its ‘popish’ statues were idolatrous. The end came in 1643 when Parliament ordered a troop of horse and two companies of foot soldiers to tear it down.
