Hangar sword
This type of sword is known as a hanger, which is a short sword with a curved blade. The single-edged blade on this sword is inscribed ‘IOHANNIS BELL ME FECIT LONDON’ (meaning ‘John Bell made me London’). It has a steel hilt with rear quillon (guard), and a broken knuckle-bow. Its pommel-cap is flat with a knob. The hilt has a single trefoil shell turned over towards the point and is decorated with all-over fretted pattern of silver dots. The grip is made from antler. During the Civil War, the London Cutlers’ Company supplied the Parliamentary army with 3200 swords and belts at 5 shillings each, 200 of which were for the use of horsemen.
