Post-Medieval — Late 17th-early 18th century
Ale pint standard capacity tankard
The maker's mark is that of Joseph Smith, London, OP4371, free in 1695. This is a smaller and simplified version of the touch Smith struck on the London touch plate as LTP522, which shows the Monument in greater detail.. The version used here was probably designed for the use on tankards and other smaller vessels. Date:. late 17th early 18th century. The name ‘Portingall’ in the inscription is almost certainly a miss-spelling of the word ‘Portugal’. Portugal Street adjoined Lincolns Inn Fields and Playhouse Street in the parish of St Clements Danes. The play house in the inscription refers to the Duke’s theatre in Portugal Row which was established in 1661 by Sir William Davenant. The Fountain tavern is not listed in Lillywhite.
