Post-Medieval — 17th century
Civil War charger
Very large tin-glazed earthenware charger decorated in blue on a hard white glaze with a decorative pattern around the inner edge of the flange and in the centre, two cavalry officers brandishing swords. There is a large stylized flower head occupying the centre-foreground. The sword was the principal weapon of the cavalry during the English Civil Wars and the offensive posture of the figures was presumably intended to indicate the rival parties: royalist and parliamentarian. The charger was probably made in one of the Southwark potteries.
