Syrupus Tussilago of Syrup of Colt's Foot drug jar
Tin-glazed earthenware wet drug jar with strap handle, globular body, spout and pedestal foot, inscribed in blue on the front 'S/TVSSIL' surmounted by a unicorn's head. The inscription is an abbreviation of ‘Syrupus Tussilago’ or Syrup of Colt's Foot which appears in Pharmacopoeia between 1618 and 1677 and is reputed to be good for a dry cough. The unicorn head motif is rare, and it is possible that this jar was used for plague-water to which ground hart’s horn had been added. Hart’s horn was used to prevent ‘swoonings… and convulsions’.
