Post-Medieval — 1634; 17th century
Sword, cutlass
A short, single-edged sword, with curving profile and serrated back, dated 1634 and marked with the running fox, a symbol occasionally found on Hounslow work. Hilt with open-work shell showing traces of silver plating and half-obliterated design of Neptune drawn by sea-horses; counter-curved quillons ending in small masks (the front one pierced through the jaws for a sword-knot), ribbed wooden grip and lion-head pommel.
