Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1985
The Passing World
This view of Cleaver Square was taken from the window of the artist's house at 131 Kennington Park Road during the night. The painting shows the domestic cosiness of people's lit windows and, by contrast, the blue, cold and dangerous element of the streets beyond. It compares the bustle of the main road, busy with fluid traffic, with the remote eeriness of the residential streets behind.
Thus, the artist creates the impression of two different worlds: one which is warm, safe and near and another which is cold, mysterious and distant. Fascinated by night subjects, Peter Snow relished the sinister quality of darkness, stating that 'all my pictures are about threat'.
